Types of Poker Chips - Personalized Design Options
Types of Poker Chips - Personalized Design Options
Clay and composite chips are available in a single solid color (most often with a pattern imprinted), two colors, and three colors.
They also come in a variety of design styles, including these three which are fairly standard: • Suited (the four card suits are imprinted around the chip) • Diamond (a series of diamonds is imprinted around the chip) • Dice (each side of a die is imprinted around the chip)
Other designs are available, and some chip manufacturers offer exclusive designs. Custom designed chips can be expensive. Lighter chips will be less expensive (300 9-gram composite chips can sell for as low as $40), while heavier chips cost more (300 13.5-gram chips sell for $110 and up).

Rounders Casino Personalized Poker Chip
Rounders Casino Personalized Poker Chip
These are very nice ChipCo chips with nice multi-color edge spots. They rival the Crystal Oyster as my favorite Chipco chip. The Rounders Casino chips come with denominations and in all the standard colors. The graphics are very nice. This is the type of chip that would appeal to many players. If you are looking for a gift for someone else and you are unsure what chip design they would like, this may be the chip for you.
All denominations have four multi-colored edge spots. Some of the edge spots are a bit hard to see (the edge spot colors don't contrast well with the base color) but there is also a yellow stripe on each that helps to bring out the difference. The Apache website provides good photos of chips on their website, including side-shots of stacked chips, and as you can see, it is easy to differentiate between stacked chips.
The pimple on this chip is very small and surrounded by a barely detectable rectangular indentation. There are no edge ridges on this chip.

NexGen Las Vegas Personalized Poker Chip
NexGen Las Vegas Personalized Poker Chip
These Series 8000 NexGen chips are very nice and may be the best of the 11.5 gram (approximately) composite chips available. They have a traditional look and great edge spots. They have a good feel to them compared to most 11.5 gram composites, probably the best. The mold has the lettering LAS VEGAS NEVADA USA engraved into the border. The lettering gives the chip a nice texture, somewhat similar to the feeling of a Horse Head chip. These chips are known as NexGen chips on some other websites.
The center of this chip is recessed so you can stick on your own custom labels printed on a color laser or ink-jet printer. In fact, this chip seems to be 'the chip of choice' if you want to do this. The center inlay area is 26.0mm (1.02 inches) wide so you can buy sheets of blank 1" labels and print them out on your own printer. You can even change the labels for each different tournament you hold. Be warned though, it can be quite tedious to stick, and center, labels on both sides of 500 or 1000 chips.
I received numerous samples of this chip. Sample diameters were 40.09, 40.03 and 40.05mm. Three chips stacked together were 10.04mm thick. The chips reviewed above were the same 10.04mm thick, even with labels on them.
I could not scratch the plastic and the colors were solid all the way through the chip. I could not find an injection mold pimple. There is a slight seam that runs down one edge, similar to many chips of this type. You cannot see or feel the seam. There are diamonds on the rolling edge of the chip. There are no edge ridges on this chip.
Unfortunately, these chips do not really sound any better than a typical 11.5 gram composite chip. The sound might not be quite so metallic, probably because of the additional 0.5 gram in weight, but there is still that same 'clink' of a metal insert chip. Putting your own custom labels on these chips will help to deaden the sound a bit.
These chips are similar to most 13 gram composite chips in that they will scratch if rubbed together or rubbed against something sharp. Over time, you will see plenty of little scratches on the face of the chip, this is to be expected. It does mar the chip somewhat but also adds "character".
These are some of the best mid-range poker chips you can buy. They have great edge spots and good colors. They feel okay and are definitely much more textured than an average composite chip. They should be at the top of any list of composite chips.

Six Stripe 10g Personalized Poker Chip
Six Stripe 10g Personalized Poker Chip
This new version of the Six Stripe weighs 10 grams compared to the earlier 7.5 grams. The extra weight is a huge improvement, giving the chip a more casino-like feel and sound. The plastic also has a more rubbery feel to it. There is no metal insert and I could not break a chip with my fingers. These chips are a good alternative to the typical 11.5 gram composite chips.
I was sent numerous samples of this chip. Sample diameters were 39.95, 39.96, 39.88, and 39.91mm. Three chips stacked together were 10.01mm thick.

The Casino's Personalized Poker Chip
The Casino's Personalized Poker Chip
These are typical Chipco chips with a unique design and plenty of low denominations. The highest denomination chip available is the $100 chip, there is nothing higher. There is, however, a 5, 10, 25 and 50 cent chips. There is also a $1, $2.50, $5, $10, $50 and $100 chips. These chips seem to be made for low-limit cash games where the low denomination chips will come in quite handy. There are no edge spots on the front or back face of the chip. There are three pairs of stripes on the rolling edge of each chip.

Tri-Color Suit and Triple Crown Personalized Poker Chip
Tri-Color Suit and Triple Crown Personalized Poker Chip
The printing and engraving details on these composites is very good, as it seems to be on all 5StarDeal composites. The Triple Crown chips are some of the nicest designed 11.5 gram composites that I've seen. Both these chips have nice colors and nice edge spots. There is no purple chip available in these two composite styles but there is a very purple-looking blue chip available.
After checking numerous samples of this chip. Sample diameters were 40.05, 40.23, 40.20 and 40.20mm. Three chips stacked together were 9.96mm thick.
The Tri-Color Suit chips have four edge spots and diamonds and bars on the rolling edge. I don't usually like bars on the edge but they don't look too bad on this chip. The Triple Crown has three edge spots and diamonds on the edge. The center is not recessed.

Horse Head Mold Personalized Poker Chip
These personalized poker chip is printed on the ASM Horse Head mold and have a traditional look, weight, and feel to them. The colors are excellent, bright but not too bright, with perfectly contrasting one-color edge spots. Horse Heads feel like quality. They feel very uniform, as if each chip is the exact same size, shape, and weight. Because of the Horse Heads recessed into the mold, they are not as smooth as some other chips and have a rougher feel when rubbed together. They seem to stick together better than any other chip and there seems to be a suction effect between chips. They were the best stacking chips that I was sent. The weight is good but slightly light.
These chips have very sharp edges. Keep in mind that these chips will improve with age and the corners will become rounded with some of the harshness of the chip disappearing. The edges will even develope small dents and gouges in them, this is natural, it blends in over time and ads character to the chip. Brass dust is added to these chips for weight. You can see the brass speckles on the rolling edge of the chip. Some people find this somewhat irritating but I like it. There are no edge ridges on this chip but there is a cross-hatch pattern embedded in the mold. You can see a series of very small vertical and horizontal lines embedded into the top and bottom faces of the chip.
I was sent five chips. The diameters were 39.54, 39.53, 39.56, 39.60, and 39.52mm. The thickness of 3 chips stacked together was 9.93mm.
The labels could not be peeled off with a fingernail but were easy to peel off with a knife. A plastic film covers a paper label which is glued onto the chip. Sometimes the paper and plastic would come off together, sometimes separately. The paper would often come off in one whole piece. I was a little shocked by how easily these labels peeled off ... my beautiful Horse Heads, my heart was filled with sorrow. On the latest batch of Horse Heads that I have received, the label was made of two seperate pieces of paper. There was one piece of paper stuck to the face of the chip and then another piece of paper glued on to the first piece of paper.
